Plot

While on a date, the narrator’s boyfriend suddenly grabs her hair on the stairs, and she thinks of death. The narrator has been subjected to the so-called dating abuse, and as she looks for a way to escape, she is conflicted about whether or not to move run up or down. In that brief moment, the narrator asks herself questions about how to define death, what death is, and whether death has really come.

This is a short story from Han Yujoo's short story collection Yeondaegi (The Chronicle), published in 2019. The author composes a story by structuring sentences through repetition, enumeration, negation, and inversion. This is the author’s efforts to not to delude herself into thinking that she understands everything that happens in our lives. In addition, she seeks to find the unique significance of each of the countless individuals in her work, and her intention is reflected in the sentences and structures of the story.

2019년에 출간된 한유주의 소설집<연대기>에 수록된 단편이다. 작가는 반복, 나열, 부정, 역전의 방법으로 문장을 만들어 이야기를 구성하는데, 이는 우리 주변에서 발생하는 많은 일들에 대해 이해했다고 단언하고 착각하지 않기 위한 작가만의 노력이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 작가는 작품을 통해 무수한 개인들 중에서 각자가 지닌 고유한 의미를 찾아내고자 하는데, 그러한 의도가 이야기를 구성하는 문장과 구조에 반영되어 있다.
