Plot

The narrator is a 13-year-old boy, who is about to start middle school. His father stays home since injuring his leg during a demolition job; his mother earns a living from running a food cart; and his older brother has mental disability. This family of four is barely surviving as they live in the rooftop room at Cheongun Multi-Unit Housing. On the first day of the last winter break of sixth grade, the narrator sees a fox on the roof. No one believes that he saw a fox, except for an old man who plays the saxophone at night. After seeing the fox, I learn many secrets about people and the world.

This is a novel by Jo Yeonga, published in 2006. It won the 11th Hankyoreh Literary Award. Through the eyes of a 13-year-old boy, this novel tells the story of a family living in an unlicensed rooftop room in a city where urban development is in full swing. It shows the image of a boy growing up with poverty and the absurd daily life behind urban development.

2006년 출간된 조영아의 장편소설이다. 제11회 한겨레문학상수상작이다. 작품은 뉴타운 개발이 한창인 도시의 어느 무허가 옥탑방에 사는 가족의 이야기를 13살 소년의 시선을 통해 보여주고 있다. 도시 개발 이면에 있는 부조리한 일상과 가족의 가난과 함께 성장하는 소년의 모습을 보여주고 있다.
