Plot

Myeong-hee meets her older sister Se-hee, who was separated during the Korean War through a reunion program for separated families. Upon meeting Se-hee, Myeong-hee is saddened to learn that she is not the older sister she remembered as a child. Myeong-hee and Se-hee feel a sense of alienation and distance due to the anti-communist ideology that swept South Korea after the Korean War, and the differences in their daily life and language. Myeong-hee, who expected to remember the past and have a great time with her sister, is greatly disappointed. But the awkwardness between the two is not their fault.

Yi Kyoung-Ja's short story Eonnireul Nochida (Losing a Sister), which won the 1st Minjung Literary Award in 2012, was published in 2014 as a “bilingual edition.” It realistically addresses the problem of separated families created by the division of the Korean Peninsula. Rather than conveying one-sided emotions of reuniting family members who have been separated for a long time, it realistically depicts the sense of incongruity and unfamiliarity created by the time spent apart by the family members through a cold-hearted gaze.

2012년 제1회 민중문학상을 수상한 이경자의 단편<언니를 놓치다>를 2014년 '바이링궐 에디션'으로 출간한 것이다.  작품은 남북의 분단으로 인해 만들어진 이산가족의 문제를 현실적으로 다루고 있다. 오랜 시간 헤어졌던 가족들이 만나는 과정에서 일방적인 감동을 전달하는 것이 아니라 떨어져 살았던 시간이 만든 이질감과 위화감 등을 냉혹한 시선으로 현실적으로 그리고 있다.
