Plot

Won-gil flees North Korea with his wife and daughter, but when his wife collapses in the Mongolian desert he cannot save her. Won-gil suffers from the guilt of abandoning his wife even as he has difficult time settling down in life in South Korea. Meanwhile, Won-gil gets to know Yeong-nam and Dong-baek, who are in a similar situation to him, and relies on them. However, Dong-baek commits suicide, unable to bear the guilt of abandoning his family and surviving alone.

This is a novel by Chon Su-chan, published in 2014. Centering on three North Korean defectors who barely managed to survive, this story talks about the most intimate and fragile human emotion—"shame.” In addition, the stories of the protagonists are ethically re-examined by intimately connecting social issues and individual choices. At the time of publication, this novel was praised for showing individuals’ existential anguish and insight into life.
