Para Yi Sang, Kumhong fue la fuente de una creación que marcaría la literatura coreana moderna. Las mujeres le causaron profundas heridas, pero le ayudaron a forjar un mundo literario nada convencional. Yi Sang empezó a escribir en 1930. Aunque gozaba de un buen trabajo como arquitecto, desesperado por una tuberculosis crónica encontró refugio en la escritura a la que dedicó el resto de su corta e intensa vida. Su avidez de mundo le llevó a confrontar el orden social con una escritura crítica y contestataria que rompió con las convenciones literarias de la época aun a costa de su propio hundimiento. Yi Sang se sumerge en la exploración de la psicología del ser humano desde un punto de vista burlesco y masoquista. Las relaciones de pareja sin lógica en sus conductas, las artimañas del amor, el sometimiento del hombre a la mujer, la infidelidad, los encuentros con las prostitutas, desenmascaran una moral donde parece que los sueños no existen en la realidad inmediata.  Flores de fuego escudriña inquisitivamente su mundo interior como hombre y como poeta. La búsqueda de sí, el descubrimiento de los errores cometidos, los lugares donde vivió y amó se revelan en unas reflexiones que corren sin límites, como cada uno de los días del autor, donde la vida corta se transforma en arte imperecedero.
