2014年4月16日，載著476人的客輪「世越號」從韓國仁川港出發，在前往濟州島途中發生事故沉沒，造成304人罹難。事發後，陸續傳出船長不顧乘客自行逃難、政府機關未在第一時間展開救援等許多令人震驚的消息，引爆輿論撻伐。

本書以此事件中負責到沉船內搜尋罹難者遺體的潛水員金冠灴為原型，寫下潛水員不為人知的經歷。潛水員在搜尋遺體期間，不但潛水次數超越身體負荷，心中更留下難以抹滅的陰影。白日，潛水員與各種後遺症搏鬥；夜晚則在夢中再度回到沉船內，見到那些孩子們。但當意外發生，政府卻遺棄了他們，不僅收回醫療補助，甚至要潛水員揹黑鍋，迫使他們終於浮出水面、打破沉默，與社會的誤解對抗。

作者金琸桓實際採訪罹難者家屬、生還學生、義警、政府官員及醫師等事件相關人物，揭發現實的殘酷，更突顯潛水員與留下來的人們永不放棄尋求真相的勇氣，展現強韌的生之力量。
