Récit saisissant de la vie d'un médecin pendant la guerre de Corée, Monsieur Han est une œuvre charnière dans la littérature coréenne contemporaine. A travers les tribulations de son personnage, Hwang Sok-Yong dresse le portrait cruel d'un univers brutalement soumis à une division entre le Nord et le Sud, en pleine tourmente idéologique, entre soumission et trahison, mensonge et dérobade, lucidité parfois cynique et pur idéalisme. D'où la pathétique beauté de son personnage, un candide pris malgré lui dans l'engrenage de l'histoire.
