1. 도입부

강정(1971년 ~ )은 대한민국의 시인이다. 1971년 부산에서 태어났으며 추계예술대 문예창작과를 졸업했다. 1992년 『현대시세계』 가을호에 「항구」 외 5편의 시를 발표하면서 시단에 등장했으며, 침소밴드 리드보컬, THE ASK 멤버로도 활동했다.

2. 생애

강정은 1992년, 당시 만 스물 한 살의 나이로 시인으로 데뷔했다. 1970년대 생으로는 가장 일찍 시단에 이름을 올린 그는 1996년 군을 제대하고 쓴 시를 모아 들고 출판사에 투고하여 1996년 첫 시집 『처형극장』을 냈다. 이 시집은 문단 안팎으로 뜨거운 반응을 얻어내는 데 성공했으며, 그를 명실공히 한국시단의 젊은 시인을 대표하는 시인으로 자리잡게 만들었다. 첫 시집이 나오고 9년이 지난 뒤에 이 시집을 만난 고종석은 이 놀라운 시집을 몰랐다는 것을 부끄러워하며 "망신(亡身)을 무릅쓴 진짜배기 탐미주의를 보기 위해서, 믿음의 순도로만이 아니라 제례의 우아함으로 신을 기쁘게 할 진짜 유미교(唯美敎)를 보기 위해서, 한국 문단은 강정의 "처형극장"을 기다려야 했다"고 역설했다.

스물여섯 살에 첫 시집을 냈던 시인 강정은 그 후 특정 장르에 국한되지 않으면서도 2004년 인터뷰와 서평, 각종 비평글들을 묶은 당대 문화비평집 '루트와 코드'를 내놓으면서 시인으로서보다 '산문작가'로 더 많이 알려졌던 것이 사실이다. 그는 문화비평집 『루트와 코드』를 비롯해 여러 매체를 통해 알려진 그의 산문은 문학과 음악, 미술, 영화 등 다채로운 영역의 텍스트 사이를 종횡하며 시인 특유의 날카로운 감식안과 감수성을 유려하고 감칠맛 나는 문장으로 보여주었다. 김연수 이응준 등과 함께 ‘탈세대’라는 시 모임을 만들어 동인으로 활동했고, 소설을 쓰기도 했다. 이후 2000년대에 등장한 70년대 생 시인들과 더불어 미래파의 하나로 불리게 되었으며, 한국 시의 전위를 대표하는 중견 시인으로 거듭날 수 있었다. 그 이후 꾸준하게 시를 발표하고 있으며, 『들려주려니 말이라 했지만,』(문학동네, 2006), 『키스』(문학과지성사, 2008), 『활』(문예중앙, 2011), 『귀신』(문학동네, 2014), 『백치의 산수』(민음사, 2016) 등 총 6권의 시집을 상재했으며, 2015년에는 16회 현대시작품상을 수상하기도 했다.

3. 작품세계

강정의 시는 인간의 정념과 인간의 정념 바깥으로 나가려는 정념으로 활활 타오른다. 인간의 감정에서 생기는 강한 집착과, 모든 집착이 사라진 순간에 대한 지향성의 공존은 강정의 시에서 ‘피로 물든 침묵’과 ‘죽음이 하는 말’ 등의 강도 높은 아이러니와 역설의 이미지로 나타난다. 강정은 두 에너지가 맞붙는 화염 속에서, 인간의 욕망과 고요의 신성과 야만의 짐승이 공존하는 혼돈의 시공간을 살아 낸다. 그는 인간이고 귀신이고 짐승이며, 산 자이며 죽은 자이고, 실상이고 허구이며, 생전이며 사후다. 강정은 원시적인 카오스의 무질서를 그대로 간직한 채 문명사회에서 살아가는 최후의 부족민이고 주술사이며 예술가다. 그런 의미에서 강정의 시적 공간은 가히 우주적 기원을 지닌 정념의 화염에 휩싸여 있고, 시적 자아는 오래된 카오스의 어둠에 묻혀 있다.

첫 시집 『처형극장』에서 강정은 죽음과 타락으로 가득한 세계를 실연해 보였다면, 두 번째 시집 『들려주려니 말이라 했지만,』에서는 이와 달리 신생에 대한 예감을 피력하는 에너지를 선보였다. 세 번째 시집 『키스』에서 강정은 세계와의 ‘깊은 키스’를 통해 소년에서 어른으로 성장하는 모습을 보였고, 네 번째 시집 『활』에서 언어라는 화살을 통해 세계의 적막을 겨냥했다. 다섯 번째 시집 『귀신』과 『백치의 산수』에서 그는 여전히 자유롭고 찬란한 에너지로 씌어진 시 그 자체의 모습을 보여주었으며, 해석이 필요하지 않은, 재료 그 자체로 작품이 되는 시의 한 정경을 드러내고 있다. 이와 관련하여 그의 막역한 동료인 이준규는 다음과 강정을 “저주받은 자이고 슬픈 자이고 피를 토하는 자이고 우는 자이고 또 어쩔 수 없이 사랑하는 자”로 묘사한다. 그의 강렬한 시적 에너지는 지금까지도 많은 독자들에게 깊은 인상을 남기고 있다.

1. Introduction

Kang Jeong (Hangul 강정; born 1971) is a South Korean poet. He was born in Busan, South Korea and studied creative writing at Chugye University for the Arts. He made his literary debut when six of his poems including “Hanggu” (항구 Port) appeared in the Fall 1992 Issue of the journal Modern Poetry World. He was a lead vocalist for Chimso Band and a member of the band THE ASK.

2. Life

Kang Jeong debuted as a poet in 1992 at the age of 21, the youngest South Korean born in 1970 to have done so. In 1996, he completed his compulsory military service and sent his poems to a publisher, who published them as a collection entitled Cheohyeonggeukjang (처형극장 Execution Theater). The collection was a critical and popular success, making Kang one of the most lauded young poets in the country. In a collection of critical essays on modern Korean poetry, literary critic and writer Ko Jong-seok expresses embarrassment for having discovered Cheohyeonggeukjang nine years after its publication and writes: “To see a true work of aestheticism that risks being ridiculed, to meet a true believer in aestheticism who pleases his god not just by the purity of his faith but by the elegance of his rituals, the South Korean literary world had to wait for Kang Jeong’s Cheohyeonggeukjang to arrive.”

After Kang Jeong published his first poetry collection at the age of 26, he wrote various genres, including his 2004 collection of interviews, reviews, and essays in cultural criticism, entitled Ruteuwa kodeu (루트와 코드 Route and Code). Following this publication, Kang became better known as an essayist than as a poet. In his essays, as seen in Ruteuwa kodeu and many other works, Kang discusses a range of material from literature and art to film and music with perceptiveness and poetic sentiment.

Kang formed a literary coterie named Talsedae (“transcending generations”) with writers Kim Yeonsu and Lee Eung Jun, and even dabbled in writing fiction. Kang, along with other South Korean poets born in the seventies who rose to prominence in the 2000s, was identified as a futurist. 3. Writing

In Kang Jeong’s poems, there is often a tension between obsessive passion and the longing for absolute dispassion. The poet takes on human, animal, or ghostly personas and explores paradoxical themes of life and death, reality and fantasy, and chaos and civilization. These themes are conveyed through imagery such as “a silence bathed in blood” or “the words of Death.”

Kang’s first poetry collection Cheohyeonggeukjang (처형극장 Execution Theater) portrays a world of death and depravity, while his second collection Deulyeojureoni marira hetjiman (들려주려니 말이라 했지만, I’ve Called It a Horse to Tell You about It But,) is filled with a sense of anticipation for new life. His third collection Kis (키스 Kiss) shows the poet maturing in his writing style, and his next work Hwal (활 Bow) compares language to an arrow aimed towards the silent world. Gwisin (귀신 Ghost) and Baekchiui sansu (백치의 산수 The Idiot’s Arithmetic) are notable for their dynamic and unrestrained energy. The poet Lee Jun-kyu has described Kang as “one who is cursed and sorrowful, who spits blood and cries and can’t help but love.”
