2. 생애
백영옥은 1974년 서울에서 태어났다. 2006년 단편 ｢고양이 샨티｣로 문학동네 신인상을 수상하며 등단했다. 2008년 첫 장편소설 『스타일』로 제4회 세계문학상을 수상했다. 『스타일』은 드라마로 만들어져 방영되었고, 중국, 일본, 태국, 베트남 등 4개 국어로 번역 출간되기도 했다. 백영옥은 한국의 일간지 <조선일보>에 ‘그 작품 그 도시’, <경향신문>에 ‘백영옥이 만난 색다른 아저씨’, <중앙SUNDAY S매거진>에 ‘심야극장’, <매일경제>에 ‘백영옥의 패스포트’ 등 다양한 칼럼을 연재했고, 한국의 케이블 방송 TVN의 ‘비밀독서단’, MBC FM4U 라디오의 ‘푸른 밤, 종현입니다’에 게스트로 출연하기도 했다.
3. 작품세계
백영옥의 소설은 주로 여성의 욕망을 다룬다. 그러나 초점이 여성이 어떤 욕망을 지니고 있는가에 있지는 않다. 그보다는 더 아름다워지고자 하는 욕망이나 사람들로부터 더 많은 관심을 얻고자 하는 욕망 등이 어떻게 세계가 여성의 몸을 착취하는 데 이용되는가가 백영옥 소설의 관심사다.
여성의 욕망과 여성의 몸의 식민화의 관계는 특히 연예계를 다룬 작품들에서 적나라하게 드러난다. 백영옥의 출세작인 『스타일』은 실제 배우들을 등장시키며, 배우들의 허상을 폭로하거나 제시하여 독자를 끌어들이는 전략을 구사한다. 소설 속에서 배우들은 과도한 미모경쟁과 신경증에 들린 감정적인 사람들이다. 소설의 또 다른 주요 인물들인 잡지 편집장과 간부급 기자들은 두뇌와 육체로 작업을 완성하는 ‘특종의 오르가즘’을 쏟아내는 치열한 자들이다. 그럼에도 독보적인 ‘스타성’은 그들의 육체자본인 ‘스타일’에서 발현된다. 그것은 성형으로 보완한 완벽한 미모, ‘에디 슬리먼’ 옷을 소화해 낼 수 있는 젠더초월, ‘경계의 파괴’를 달성하는 ‘메마른’ 몸에 있다. 배우들의 재능이나 개인사 같은 것은 부차적이다. 다른 매체와의 경쟁에서 이기기 위해 최대한 화려하고 독창적인 컨셉으로 스타와 그들의 이면이 풍부하게 꾸며져야 한다. ‘이미지’에 중독된 배우들의 나르시시즘과 결탁한 ‘허구’로 꾸민 인터뷰 기사가 정확한 감동으로 연결되어야 하는 패러독스가 『스타일』이 그리는 연예계의 진실이다.

Baek Young-ok (born 1974) is a South Korean writer.
2. Life
Baek Young-ok was born in Seoul in 1974. She won the Munhakdongne New Writer Award in 2006 with her short story “Goyang-I shanti” (고양이 샨티 Shanti the Cat). She won the 4th Segye Literature Award in 2008 with her first novel, Sta-il (스타일 Style). Sta-il (스타일 Style) was made into a TV drama, and was translated into 4 languages and published in China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Baek Young-ok has written various columns such as ‘That Work, That City’ on Korea’s daily newspaper Chosun Ilbo, ‘Beak Young-ok Meets With Unusual Men’ on Kyunghyang Daily News, ‘Night Movies’ on Joongang Sunday S Magazine, and ‘Baek Young-ok’s Passport’ on Maeil Kyungjae. She has also made guest appearances on ‘The Secret Book Club’ on the cable channel TVN, and ‘This Blue Night, Presented by Jong-hyun’ on MBC’s FM4U radio.
3. Writing
Baek Young-ok’s fiction often deals with the desires of women. However, the focus of her writing is not on which desires women have. Rather, Baek Young-ok’s stories put more emphasis on how the desire for becoming more beautiful, or the desire to gain more attention from people are used by society to take advantage of women’s bodies.
Women’s desires and the colonization of women’s bodies is clearly shown in works that specifically deal with the world of celebrities. Her major work Sta-il (스타일 Style) presents actual existing actors, and she draws readers in by exposing or suggesting the illusion of actors. In the novel, the actors are emotional people who are very competitive about their looks and are highly neurotic. The other characters of the novel, the editor in chief of the magazine and the senior reporters, are fierce individuals who work with their mind and body, and pour out ‘orgasms of exclusives’. However, the unique ‘star quality’ only manifests from ‘style’, their physical capital. This comes from their perfect beauty that has been improved by plastic surgery, their gender transcendence through which they can pull off ‘Hedi Slimane’ clothing, and their ‘barren’ bodies that achieve the ‘destruction of boundaries’. The talent or the private concerns of the actors are secondary. In order to win the competition against other media, the stars must richly decorate themselves as well as their inner side, with the most fabulous and unique concept. The paradox that somehow the narcissism of actors addicted to ‘image’, and the interview decorated by collusive ‘illusion’, must lead to a place of actual emotion, is the reality of celebrities shown by Sta-il (스타일 Style).
