Plot

The narrator befriends the members of the Serbian Show Dance Troupe, who come to perform at the theater. Of various ethnicities, the dance troupe members are full of longing and loss of their homeland. One day, Anna falls ill from a cold, and Akim and Marie elope. The performances are in the danger of being cancelled, and the dance troupe’s contract for performances is revoked.

This is a short story by Lee Hyoseok, serialized in The Dong-A Ilbo from November 29 to December 28, 1939. Through the narrator, who paints advertisements for the theater, and the members of the Show Dance Troupe, this story illumines the people’s loss that transcend the boundaries of nations and ethnicities, such as the thirst for foreign sentiments and longing for home.

이효석이 1939년11월29일부터 같은 해 12월28일까지 <동아일보>에 연재한 작품이다. 극장의 광고 그림을 그리는 '나'와 쇼오가무단의 구성원들을 통해 異國情緖에 대한 갈증, 고향에 대한 그리움 등 국가와 인종의 경계를 넘어서는 인간의 상실감을 조명하고 있다.
