Plot

It is the 1980s, and the narrator, a South Korean student activist, finds himself in Berlin. There, he meets Yi Gilyong, a film director and labor activist, but the latter has been brainwashed by the South Korean intelligence service and is working as a spy under the alias Kang Siu. The narrator happens to possess a black-and-white nude photo of a woman, left behind by his grandfather (who was forcibly conscripted during the Japanese occupation), and is startled to discover that Kang Siu owns an identical copy. Kang Siu is also in some way connected to Jeongmin, the narrator’s girlfriend: Jeongmin’s maternal uncle, who died of a suicidal drug overdose, and Kang Siu’s grandfather were both involved in the manufacture of amphetamine in Japan. Brought together by coincidence, the three characters explore their own identities, and determine what it is exactly that led to their encounter.

This novel by Kim Yeonsu was published in 2007. It depicts various interconnected stories as related by the narrator. Through the narrator’s search for identity and connection with others, the novel rallies against the perceived meaninglessness of a world made up of coincidences.
