Plot

The narrator is a reporter, but she used to be a part of the student movement. She wants to interview Kwon Ogyu, who is behind bars, but she is told by her boss to interview Lee Minja instead. During her interview with Lee, the narrator compares Lee’s house to Kwon’s shabby place, and she becomes disillusioned by the people and society that are more interested in a person like Lee than in Kwon, who sacrificed his life for democracy and freedom.

1933년 <실천문학>에 발표된 공지영의 단편소설이다. 1980년대 학생 운동을 했던 작가의 경험을 살려 당대의 현장을 섬세한 시선으로 그려냈다. 노동 운동을 하던 1980년대는 이미 지나갔으나 그 시대에 희생되었던 사람과 역사를 기억해야 할 것을 이야기하고 있다.

This short story by Gong Ji-young is included in her collection of short stories published in 1994 with the title Human Decency. The bilingual edition as a single novella was published in 2012. In it, the writer delivers a clear message that the people who sacrificed their lives for democracy and freedom in the 1980s must be remembered.
