主人公李真是朝鲜时代的宫廷舞姬，因为一次邂逅、一次凝望而与法国驻朝鲜公使结为伉俪，远渡重洋，成为朝鲜历史上第一个走出国门、到达欧洲的人。李真在法国广泛结交社会名流，怀着对故国的热爱翻译朝鲜文学，并以书信的方式向朝鲜王后介绍自己的见闻和感受，希望朝鲜也能开启国门，走向现代富强之路。当时的朝鲜积弱积贫，正在遭受日本的凌辱，王后即使有心，却也无力做出过人之举。李真承受着思乡病的折磨，终于离开法国，重返朝鲜，亲眼目睹了朝鲜历史上最为凄惨的一幕：明成皇后惨遭日本人杀害，朝鲜亡国。希望破灭的李真吞咽下曾将自己引向精彩世界的法语词典，悲伤地结束了年轻的生命。
