本书以两条线索展开：一条写名医沈英斌与妻子的婚姻。封建观念极重的女主人公置已读高中的女儿于不顾，终于高龄得子，然丈夫无法容忍家长制对生命神圣性的玷污，出现了婚外恋，由此家庭产生婚变。另一条线索是，男主人公的妹夫京浩身患癌症，而家资亿万的财阀宋会长、他的父亲却将金钱与权势放在首位，无视儿子的病痛，无所作为。儿子死后，他又将儿媳的财产夺走。
