In 2009, the Korean Literature Essay Contest was held in 16 countries with various designated works of
Korean literature. The contest, launched in 2005 in three countries, has established itself as a major event in
the field of Korean literature. In 2009, the contest was open not only to students of Korean studies, but to
high school students and the general public as well, thus fostering and encouraging interest in Korean culture
and literature in readers from abroad.
In December, five winners from Spain, Mexico, Vietnam, Poland, and Italy, whose essays won the grand
prize in their respective countries, and who then went on to compete with each other in the final evaluation,
were invited to Korea and provided with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the various cultures
of Korea. Their stay lasted for six days, from December 7 to 12. The winners all conceded that it was a great
opportunity for them to experience the beauty of the diverse Korean culture through visits to Gyeongbok
Palace and Insa-dong, which allowed them to experience traditional Korean culture, and also through a trip
to the National Museum of Korea and the “Jump” performance.
