The coronavirus has upended the summer plans of both publishers and readers, just as it has upended nearly everything else in 2020.

Publication of many promising books has been pushed back several months, such as Elena Ferrante's novel "The Lying Life of Adults" (now planned for Sept. 1) and Laila Lalami's "Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America" (Sept. 22). The only author visits you can experience for the time being are online events.
