제목
‘마당 깊은 집’은 주인공 길남의 가족이 피난살이를 한 대구 장관동의 셋집을 가리킨다. 낭만적인 뉘앙스와는 달리, 가난한 피난민들이 좁은 집에 모여 살던 열악한 주거 상황과 그들의 애환을 반영한 현실적인 제목이다.

플롯 요약
소년 길남은 한국전쟁 중에 가족과 떨어져 고향에서 남의 집에 얹혀 지내다가 휴전이 되자 대구 장관동 셋집에 살던 가족들과 재회한다. 이 셋집에는 길남의 가족 외에도 각지에서 모여든 다른 피난민 가족들이 함께 살고 있었다. 길남의 어머니는 전쟁 중 월북한 공산주의자 남편을 대신하여 삯바느질로 힘겹게 생계를 유지해 나간다. 어머니는 미래에는 장남인 길남이 가족을 책임져야 한다고 강조하고, 길남은 자신에게만 유독 엄한 어머니를 야속하게 느끼면서도 학교 다니기를 포기하고 신문팔이에 나선다. 크리스마스를 맞이하여 주인집은 미군 장교들을 초청해 파티를 연다. 길남은 자신의 삶과는 너무나 대조되는 호화로운 파티를 구경하다가 어머니에게 심하게 매를 맞는다. 원망스럽고 서러운 마음에 가출을 단행한 길남은 대구역 대합실에서 이틀을 지내다가 자신을 찾아온 어머니와 함께 집으로 돌아간다. 이듬해 상당한 재산을 모은 주인집은 공사를 이유로 세입자들에게 퇴거를 요구한다.1)

주제

《마당 깊은 집》은 ‘마당 깊은 집’에서 셋방살이를 하는 다양한 인물들을 통해 한국전쟁 이후 피난민들의 삶의 모습이 어떠했는지를 구체적으로 보여준다. 미군 장교와 결혼하여 고통스러운 전쟁의 기억이 담긴 한국 땅을 떠나는 미선, 고무팔에 쇠갈고리를 달고 행상을 하는 상이군인 준호 아버지, 남한의 자본주의 체제에 반감을 품고 월북을 시도하다가 체포된 정태, 기생들의 옷을 바느질해주며 살아가는 길남의 어머니 등은 전쟁으로 인해 피폐한 삶을 살아야 했던 당시의 수많은 피난민들을 대변한다.2)

스타일
《마당 깊은 집》은 작가의 자전적 체험에 기초한 소설이다.3) 작가를 대변하는 소년 길남을 주인공으로 삼아 성장소설로서의 면모를 보여준다.4) 길남은 아버지의 부재와 그로 인한 가난 때문에 어머니와 갈등하며, 길남의 성장은 어머니와의 불화와 화해를 중심축으로 진행된다. 어머니는 한편으로는 길남에게 삶의 기준을 제시해 주고 뒷바라지하는 ‘좋은’ 어머니이지만, 다른 한편으로는 그에게 아버지의 역할을 맡기를 강압적으로 요구하는 ‘나쁜’ 어머니로 그려진다. 부재하는 아버지와 억압적인 어머니로 인해 길남은 어딘가에 자신의 ‘진짜’ 어머니가 있을 것이라고 생각하고 가출을 하기도 한다. 그러나 결국 어머니의 마음을 이해하게 되면서 내면적인 성장을 이룬다.5)

한편 《마당 깊은 집》은 한국의 대표적인 전후 세태소설이기도 하다. 한국전쟁 이후 살아남은 자들의 가장 우선적인 목표는 빈곤으로부터의 탈출이었다. 이 목표는 그들의 내면을 규율하고 지배하는 절대적인 가치로 작동했으며 개인적인 욕망을 실현하거나 양심을 보존하는 것을 다음 단계의 과제로 미루게 만들었다.6) 주인공 길남은 그의 가족을 비롯해 ‘마당 깊은 집’에 함께 사는 피난민 가족들이 각기 가난과 어떻게 싸우는지를 관찰하면서 소년의 시점에 포착한 당시의 세태를 전달한다.

비평적 반응
《마당 깊은 집》은 1950년대 한국의 현실을 사실적으로 재현하여 객관성을 확보하는 한편, 어린 소년의 시점을 취함으로써 서정성도 잃지 않았다고 평가된다.7) 65만 부 이상 판매되는 등 대중들에게도 큰 호응을 얻었다.8)

마당 깊은 집 체험관
2019년 대구 중구는 《마당 깊은 집》을 토대로 한 문학체험관 ‘김원일의 마당 깊은 집’을 개관했다. 이 체험관에는 마당 깊은 집의 모형이 마련되어 있고 1950년대 대구의 풍경과 생활 사진을 전시하여 한국전쟁 시기 피난민의 생활상을 느껴볼 수 있도록 하였다. 김원일의 기증품 및 ‘작가의 방’도 구경할 수 있다.9)

각색
김원일의 《마당 깊은 집》을 원작으로 한 TV드라마 <마당 깊은 집>이 1990년 1월 8일부터 1990년 1월 30일까지 총 8회에 걸쳐 한국의 문화방송(MBC)에서 방영되었다.10) 실향민으로서의 아픔이나 가난으로 인한 생활고를 사실적으로 그려 큰 공감을 이루어냈다고 평가되며 연출과 연기도 호평을 받았다.11)
2016년에는 연극단체 도도에서 《마당 깊은 집》을 동명의 연극으로 각색해 소극장에서 공연을 올렸다.12)

Madang gipeun jib (마당 깊은 집 The House with a Sunken Courtyard) is a Korean novel by Kim Won-il. Set in Daegu’s Janggwan neighborhood after the Korean War, the novel gives a detailed depiction of the life of refugees. Madang gipeun jib is deemed one of the most representative works of post-war literature, maintaining both the objectivity of a novel about the state of society and the lyricism of a bildungsroman. The novel has also enjoyed immense commercial success, selling more than 650,000 copies.

Overview

About the Title
The title Madang gipeun jib (literally, ‘house with a deep courtyard’) refers to a rented house in the Janggwan neighborhood of Daegu that the main character Gilnam and his family live in as refugees. Despite sounding romantic, the title is actually a realistic title that reflects both the ups and downs of life and the poor living conditions of destitute refugees who had to live in a small house.

Plot Summary
In Madang gipeun jib, young Gilnam becomes separated from his family during the Korean War. Alone in his hometown, Gilnam seeks refuge in someone else’s house. At the end of the war, Gilnam reunites with his family who had been living in a rented house in the Janggwan neighborhood of Daegu. But Gilnam’s family is not the only family living in this house of refugees—several refugee families in fact inhabit the house.  Gilnam’s father was a communist and left for North Korea during the war; in his absence, Gilnam’s mother has had to make a difficult living as a seamstress. Gilnam’s mother stresses that in the future Gilnam, as the head of the house, must take responsibility for the family. While Gilnam feels bitter toward his mother for being especially hard on him, he still quits school and starts selling newspapers to support the family. On Christmas, Gilnam and his mother’s landlord throws a party and invites several American military officers. Gilnam watches the luxurious party and is astounded at the contrast between his life and theirs. When he returns home, his mother beats him. Resentful and upset, Gilnam resolves to run away from home. But after two days waiting at Daegu Station, Gilnam returns home with his mother who has come to find him. Not long after this, however, their landlord evicts Gilnam’s family and the other tenants living in the house for construction.[1]

Main Themes
Through the diverse cast of characters who inhabit the ‘house with a deep courtyard’ as refugees, Madang gipeun jib gives a vivid depiction of what it was like to be a refugee in post-war Korea. Mi-seon, who marries an American office and leaves Korea behind with its painful memories of war; Jun-ho’s father, a disabled veteran and peddler with a rubber arm and a hook for a hand; Jeong-tae who was fed up with South Korea’s capitalist system and fled North only to get caught and arrested; and Gilnam’s mother who makes a living sewing the clothes of Gisaeng—all of these characters represent the countless number of refugees who had to live in poverty after the war.[2]

Writing Style
Madang gipeun jib is based on the life experiences of the author, Kim Won-il.[3] The novel shows characteristics of a bildungsroman, using the young Gilnam, who represents the author, as a protagonist.[4] Gilnam is at odds with his mother because of their poverty and his father’s absence, and as such, his development revolves around the conflict and reconciliation with his mother. On the one hand, Gilnam’s mother is depicted as a “good” mother who takes care of Gilnam and works to giving him a better standard of living, but on the other, she is depicted as a “bad” mother, demanding that her son take on the role of his absent father. Because of his absent father and oppressive mother, Gilnam thinks that his “real” mother must be somewhere out there and leaves home. But finally coming to understand his mother, Gilnam undergoes great emotional growth.[5]

Madang gipeun jib is also one of the most representative works of post-war Korean literature. As the novel shows, the priority of the people who survived the Korean War was escaping poverty. This goal served as the governing value in their lives and pushed any personal desires or aspirations to the peripheries.[6] Observing how his family and other refugees living in the house attempted to stave of poverty, the main character Gilnam conveys a compelling picture of the times through the eyes of a young boy.

Critical Reception
Madang gipeun jib has been praised for realistically and objectively representing the reality of Korea in the 1950s through the eyes of a young boy while at the same time not losing any lyricism.[7] The novel also received popular acclaim, selling more than 650,000 copies.[8]

The Madang gipeun jib Experience Center
In 2019, the city of Daegu opened an experience center based on Kim Won-il’s novel Madang gipeun jib. The experience center contains a house made in the image of the house from the novel and exhibits pictures of life and landscapes from Daegu in the 50s, allowing visitors to get a feel for how refugees during the Korean War lived. Visitors can also view “The Author’s Room” and donations from Kim Won-il.[9]

Adaption
The TV drama titled Madang gipeun jib (마당 깊은 집 A House with a Sunken Courtyard) was aired in Korea on MBC from January 8, 1990 to January 30, 1990. The drama was based on Kim Won-il’s novel Madang gipeun jib and ran for a total of 8 episodes.[10] The drama was praised for its directing, acting, and ability to realistically depict the pain and poverty of those families displaced during the Korean War.[11]

In 2016, the Dodo theatre group performed at a small theater an adaption of Kim Won-il’s novel Madang gipeun jib. The play bore the same name as the novel.[12]
