1. 도입부
이병률(1967년 ~ )은 대한민국의 시인, 방송작가, 산문작가이다. 서정시를 쓰는 경향이라고 평가받는다. 한국에서 여행에세이를 써서 100만부 이상 판매한 유일한 작가이다. MBC 라디오 프로그램의 작가를 오랫동안 맡았고, 현재 문학동네 계열의 출판사 <달>의 대표를 맡고 있다.
2. 생애
이병률(1967년 ~ )은 대한민국의 시인, 방속작가, 산문작가이다. 충청북도 제천에서 태어났다. 좋아하는 것과 싫어하는 것들을 순서대로 적어내려가기 위해 글쓰기를 시작하게 되었다고 한다. 서울예술대학 문예창작과를 졸업했다. 1995년 《한국일보》 신춘문예에 당선되어 작품 활동을 시작했다. 2006년 제11회 현대시학작품상을 수상했다. MBC 라디오 《이소라의 FM 음악도시》 작가로도 활동했다. 한편 그는 존레논의 평전을 집필한 바 있고 <끌림>, <바람이 분다 당신이 좋다> 등의 여행 산문집을 출간하면서 대중들에게 이름이 알려졌다. 그의 여행 에세이는 단순히 여행지에 대한 소개와 에피소드만 담아내는 것이 아니라, 독자와 교감하고 여행지의 풍경을 새로운 감성으로 풀어낸다. 그는 한국에서 여행에세이를 100만 부 이상 판매한 유일한 작가이다. 현재 문학동네 계열의 출판사 「달」의 대표이며 <시힘> 동인으로 활동하고 있다.
3. 작품세계
이병률은 서정시인이다. 그의 시에서는 섬세한 언어감각과 내밀한 자기 응시가 돋보인다. 그의 작품은 사랑, 이별, 죽음 등 삶의 여러 가지 풍경을 대상으로 삼는다. 그의 첫 시집 『당신은 어딘가로 가려한다』(2003)는 고독한 인간의 심상을 묘파했다. 하지만 시인은 독아적 세계에 머물러 있지 않고, 외부의 세상을 향해 손을 내밀려 했다. ‘사람의 집에 사람의 그림자가 드리워지는 일이 목메게 아름다운 일'이라는 사실을 알고 있기 때문이었다. 그는 사물이나 인간을 눈여겨보고 그것들을 사랑하고 아끼고 가엾이 여기는 모습을 보여줬다. 이때 그의 시는 무겁고 슬픈 삶, 외롭고 쓸쓸한 삶에 한 줌 온기를 불어넣는 것이 되었다.
이런 미학적 문제의식은 이병률의 이후 시들에서도 이어지는 것이다. 다만 시대에 따라 그의 작품은 다양한 색채를 띄어왔다. 그의 두 번째 시집 『바람의 사생활』(창비, 2006)에서는 누군가를 애틋하게 그리워하고 기다리는 정서가 두드러졌다. 시인은 가닿을 수 없는 것들과 쉽게 말할 수 없는 것들에 대한 애착을 보여주었다. 『찬란』에서는 ‘살아있음’이 무엇인지에 대해 통찰함으로써, 정체하지 않고 살아가는 것 자체가 ‘찬란’한 일이라는 인식을 보여주었다. 『눈사람 여관』(문학과 지성사, 2013)에서 시인은 순간과 영원을 관통하는 존재의 의미를 추구하면서 시적 자아로서의 ‘나’와 마주한다. 여기에서 시인은 문학이 ‘나’라는 존재를 가늠하기 위해 끊임없이 자신을 찾아 떠나는 여행과도 같다고 인식을 보여주었다. 그는 이런 사유를 거쳐 ‘나’라는 존재가 사회 속에서 개인이 맺고 있는 무수한 ‘관계들’을 거둬낸 ‘사람’이라는 결론을 내린다. 이병률은 이런 철학적 인식들을 서정적인 표현으로 표현해낸 시인으로 평가받고 있다.

1. Intro
Lee Byungryul (born 1967) is a South Korea poet, television writer, and prose writer. He is viewed as having a tendency for lyrical poetry. He is the only writer in Korea to have published a travel essay and sold more than a million copies of it. For a long time he was a writer for MBC Radio, and currently he is the president of the publisher, Dal, an imprint of Munhakdongne.
2. Life
Lee Byungryul (born 1967) is a South Korea poet, television writer, and prose writer. He was born in Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do. He had first started writing when he wanted to list all the things he likes and he hates. He graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts in creative writing. He started his literary career when he was selected for the 1995 Korea Times New Writer’s Contest. In 2006, he won the 11th Contemporary Poetry Award. He also worked as a writer for the MBC radio show, Lee Sora’s FM Music City . Meanwhile, he has also written a critical biography on John Lennon, and he began to be publicly known as he published travel books such as Kkeullim (끌림 Attraction), and Barami bunda dangsini johda (바람이 분다 당신이 좋다 The Wind Blows, and I Like You). His travel essays not only describe the travel locations as well as episodes that have happened on location, but also communicate with the reader and describe the sight of the travel locations with new emotions. He is currently the only writer to have sold more than 1 million copies of travel essays in South Korea. He is currently the president of the publisher, Dal, an imprint of Munhakdongne, and a member of Sihim.
3. Writing
Lee Byungryul is a lyric poet. His poetry shows delicate sense of language, and intimate self-contemplation. His works deal with life’s various scenes such as love, parting, and death. His first poetry collection, Dangsineun eodingaro garyeohanda (당신은 어딘가로 가려한다 You are trying to go somewhere), details the image of a lonely person. However, the poet does not remain isolated, and tries to reach out to the outside world. This is because he knows that ‘a person’s shadow coming over a person’s home is a wonderfully beautiful thing’. He has shown that he carefully observes objects or persons, as well as loving, caring, and having compassion for them. Here, his poetry became a provider of warmth to a life of heaviness and tragedy, of loneliness and isolation.
Such an aesthetic critical mind also continues in Lee Byungryul’s later poems. However, his poetry have shown diverse elements according to the era. His second poetry collection, Baramui sasaenghwal (바람의 사생활 The Wind’s Personal Life) (Changbi, 2006), expressed a strong feeling of greatly longing for someone. The poet showed attachment to things that cannot be reached, and things that cannot be easily said. In Chanlan (찬란 Brilliance), by thinking about what ‘living’ means, he makes the readers aware that the act of living itself without stopping is something that is ‘brilliant’. In Nunsaram yeogwan (눈사람 여관 Snowman Motel) (Moonji Publishing, 2013) the poet strives for a meaning of existence that penetrates the moment as well as eternity, facing ‘himself’ as a poetic consciousness. Here, the poet shows his awareness that literature is like an endless journey to find one’s self in order to understand the existence of ‘I’. After such thinking process, he concludes that ‘I’ is a ‘person’ that has cultivated countless ‘relationships’ that an individual has in society. Lee Byungryul is praised as a poet that has been able to describe such philosophical insights in lyric expression.
