Gyeongbokgung Palace in downtown Seoul, whose red-and-green, pagoda-style roofs hark back to the 14th century, is one of Kyung-sook Shin's treasured spots in the city where she lives. All Seoulites, she has written, live beneath its "sheltering wings". Yet, in a gallery cafe on the slopes above the royal palace, she recalls her terror on first entering the South Korean capital 35 years ago, as a farmer's daughter aged 16.
