Hwang Sok-yong ist eine politische Leitfigur Koreas. Seine Rolle entspricht derjenigen von Heinrich Böll oder Günter Grass. 1943 in der Mandschurei geboren und in Seoul aufgewachsen, gewann Hwang schon im Gymnasium den ersten Literaturpreis, aber eine bürgerliche Karriere als Schriftsteller war für ihn unter der Militärdiktatur undenkbar.
