Havana International Book Fair

LTI Korea attended the Havana International Book Fair in Cuba from February 12 to 16 along with poet Moon Chung-hee (President of the Society of Korean Poets) and novelist Oh Jung-hee. This was the first time that Korea took part in the Havana International Book Fair. Nearly hundred Korean literary works and young adult books translated into Spanish and English were displayed at the Korean pavilion at the Fair. At the “Evening of Korean Literature” event held at Hotel Nacional on February 13, poet Moon Chung-hee read from her anthology, I Am Moon, while novelist Oh Jung-hee read from her short story, “Evening Games.” Next, an award ceremony for essay and poetry illustration contests was held, followed by a Korean music performance by Cuban students. The Cuban Minister of Justice, Maria Esther Reus Gonzalez, and the Vice President of Instituto Cubano del Libro (Cuban Book Institute), Edel Morales also attended this event. A book donation ceremony was held at the La Cabaña fortress on February 14 at which nearly fifty Korean books were gifted to the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). A Korean literature event was held at the Casa Museo José Lezama Lima which was attended by around fifty people. The chairperson of the Poets Association of Cuba, Alberto Marrero and cultural reporter, Raquel Marrero delivered their criticism of the two Korean writers’ works. LTI Korea also donated around fifty Korean works in Spanish translation and children’s educational books to Club Martiano Amistad Cuba Corea, the cultural center for Korean-Cubans. Korea does not have official diplomatic ties with Cuba as of now. However, judging from the great response of the local readers at the literary events organized by LTI Korea, we firmly believe this will prove to be the stepping-stone to the establishment of friendly relations between the two countries.
