“An Encounter with Korean Poetry and Fiction through Translation”
The Literature Translation Institute of Korea is hosting the 2021 Online-Offline Bilingual Readings of Korean Literature in nine cities from May to October. This year marks the fifth anniversary of Bilingual Readings, which was launched in 2017. Starting this year, Bilingual Readings has been reorganized into an annual event of the Seoul International Writers Festival with the twin goals of spatially expanding the festival, which had been limited to Seoul, to the rest of the country and communicating with people from a wider range of age groups through Korean literature to ultimately increase the readership of literary works.
Bilingual Reading events “Yeok-si (Translated Poetry)” and “Yeok-seol (Translated Prose)” bring Korean poets and novelists together with translators to read their works in both Korean and foreign languages. The events were designed with the intent to inform the Korean public of the current state of Korean literature, which is being translated into various languages for readers around the world.
This year’s Bilingual Readings will introduce children’s and young adult literature and writers to the public and also provide opportunities for reader participation, such as events for local high school and college students to translate Korean literature into foreign languages and to read their translations.

“번역을 통해 만나는 한국의 시와 소설”
한국문학번역원은 5월부터 10월까지 전국 9개 도시에서 2021 온-오프라인 한국문학 교차언어 낭독회를 개최합니다. 2017년을 시작으로 5년째를 맞는 교차언어 낭독회는 올해부터 서울국제작가축제의 연중행사로 개편되어 서울에 한정되었던 기존 축제의 공간적 외연을 넓히고, 보다 다양한 연령층의 대중들과 한국문학으로 소통하여 문학 향유 기반을 확장하고자 합니다.
교차언어 낭독회 ‘역:시(譯:詩)’와 ‘역:설(譯:說)’은 각각 한국 시인과 소설가가 번역가와 만나 한국어와 외국어로 작품을 낭독하는 행사로, 다양한 언어로 번역되어 전 세계 독자들과 만나고 있는 한국문학의 현재를 국내 대중들에게도 알리려는 취지로 기획되었습니다.
특히 올해는 아동·청소년 문학 작가와 작품을 소개하여 문학과 언어에 관심 있는 지역 내 대학·고등학생들에게 외국어 번역 및 낭독 기회를 제공하는 등 독자가 직접 참여할 수 있는 행사도 마련됩니다.
