Hwang Sok-Yong est un écrivain objectivement très intéressant : trapu, massif, il y a en lui une alliance rare d'action, d'engagement et de courage. Il a fait partie de cette génération de Coréens, « embarquée au Vietnam par les Etats-Unis dans le but d'établir une zone de "Pax Americana" en Extrême-Orient pendant la Guerre froide ». C'était en 1966-1967 : Sok-Yong avait 23 ans. Aujourd'hui, paraît en France, plus de quinze ans après sa publication en Corée, L'Ombre des armes , « roman-total », inspiré de son expérience personnelle.
