Bandi, dat ‘vuurvlieg’ betekent in het Koreaans, is het pseudoniem van een Noord-Koreaanse auteur die deze verhalen in het geheim schreef en zelf nog steeds in Noord-Korea woont. Hij was een ‘goedgekeurde’ auteur, maar nadat hij getuige was geweest van de ontberingen tijdens de jaren tachtig en negentig, nam hij stelling tegen het regime, dat hij verantwoordelijk houdt voor de massale hongersnood en de erbarmelijke omstandigheden in Noord-Korea. In De aanklacht geeft Bandi een stem aan het volk, dat nog steeds gebukt gaat onder de repressie van de totalitaire staat.

Bandi wordt nu al de Noord-Koreaanse Solzjenitsyn genoemd en zijn stijl wordt vergeleken met die van Gogol en Tsjechov.
