The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea, President: Kim Seong-Kon, professor Emeritus at Seoul National University) took part in the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Book Fair, held in Toronto, Canada from March 17 through March 19. The AAS holds an annual conference and book fair every spring in a North American city, and the LTI has set up a booth every year since 2009. Over 100 organizations participated in this year’s AAS Book Fair, with a total of 370 panel sessions held at the conference. In order to actively promote the LTI Korea’s activities, the LTI Korea booth displayed about 20 translated Korean publications that received the Institute’s support grant. LTI Korea also hosted a meeting between affiliates of North American universities, scholars of Korean studies, and translators to introduce LTI Korea’s Korean classics project. Participants shared their views on and suggestions for the effective translation and publication of Korean classics in the English-speaking market. LTI Korea also held meetings with over a dozen major publishing companies to actively seek out potential publishers for Korean literature abroad.
The book fair was a fine opportunity for LTI Korea to meet with the scholars and publishers working in North America for the purpose of establishing a bridgehead for the entry of Korean literature into the local market. LTI Korea also donated copies of the works displayed at the booth to the Korean Cultural Centre in Canada and discussed the two organizations’ potential for future cooperation. LTI Korea will use this opportunity to encourage not only more academic discussion on Korean literature, but interest in the field from ordinary readers as well.
