20世纪初的大韩帝国面临内忧外患，国家和民族处于伸手不见五指的历史前夜。1905年4月，英国轮船“依尔福”号运载1033名朝鲜人驶离济物浦港，朝着他们心目中的世外桃源墨西哥驶去。这些朝鲜人中有王室贵胄，有巫婆和神父，有没落贵族，有职业军人，形形色色，出身各异。在遥远的旅途中，在拥挤不堪的轮船上，他们逐渐模糊了身份的差异和界线。到达墨西哥后，他们被卖给艾纳肯农场做奴隶。为了争取权益，他们多次发动暴乱，却始终不能改变命运。四年过去了，他们与农场主的合同期满，有些人因为与玛雅女子结婚，便决定继续留在艾纳肯农场，大部分朝鲜人都在墨西哥扎下了根基。金英夏通过对民族苦难史的艺术升华，省察了近代以来朝鲜民族的苦难历程，作品中充满了不幸和悲悯、理想和失败、命运和抗争，尽管是一场深刻的悲剧，却没有沦为感伤主义的产物，赋予主人公们以超人意志并写出了“英雄本色”式的冒险故事。
