Introduction
Ham Seongho (1963~) is a Korean poet and architect. He has introduced a unique poetry world which does away with conventions and stereotypes through his critical view of the modern civilization and capitalism. 1)
Life
Ham was born in Sokcho, Gangwon-do in 1963. He started writing after he saw the play Red Peter and was fascinated by its story, makeup, and actors. 2) He made his debut by three poems including Biwa baram sokeseo (비와 바람 속에서, With Rain And Wind) on the summer edition of Literature and Society in 1990.
He published poetry collections 56Eok 7Cheonmannyeonuigodok (56억 7천만년의고독 Solitude of 5 Billion and 670 Million Years) in 1992, Seong Taj Mahal (성 타즈마할 St. Taj Mahal) in 1998, Neomu Areumdaun Byeong (너무 아름다운 병, Too Beautiful Disease) in 2001, Kirtimukha (키르티무카) in 2011, and essay collections Heomuui girok (허무의 기록 Record of Futility) in 1998, Dangsineul wohae jieun jip (당신을 위해 지은 집 A House for You) in 2011, Amugeotto haji anneun jeulgeoum (아무것도 하지 않는 즐거움 Joy of Not Doing Anything) in 2013. He won the Modern Poetry Award in 2001. He was a member of “21segi jeonmang” (the 21st century prospect), and an editor of Munhak Pan (문학 판 Literature Pan) and culture webzine PENCIL.
He won the new critics award of an architecture magazine Gonggan (공간, Space) in 1991 and worked as an architecture critic. He published architecture review books Geonchukeui Stress (건축의 스트레스, Stress of Architecture) in 2004, and Banhaneun Geonchuk (반하는 건축, Fascinating Architecture) in 2012.
Besides literature and architecture, he has worked in various fields as a comic-book critic, film critic, performance planner and exhibition coordinator. 3) He published a comic-book review Manhwadang Insaeng (만화당 인생, Comic-book mania’s life) in 2002, and wrote an essay book Seoul saenghwaleui balgyeon (서울 생활의 발견, Discovery of Seoul life) with art and exhibition planners. He also participated in co-written travel essay book Natseon ddange holida (낯선 땅에 홀리다, Fascinated By a Strange Land) in 2002.
As the controversy over the construction of Jeju navy base rose in 2007, he was a chief of a committee for Gangjung Peace Book café in 2013. 4) He formed a project group Bikkyeoganeun saramdeul (비껴가는 사람들, People Who Deflect) with poet Kang, Jeong and novelist Kim, Taeyong and staged a performance Naemsae piwoseo joisonghamnida (냄새 피워서 죄송합니다, Sorry To Give Out Smell). 5) 6)
He also had a keen interest in humanities, and wrote to “Yunghap Inmunhak (융합 인문학, Converging Humanities)” in 2016 and “Cheongchuneul wihan inmunhak (청춘을 위한 인문학, Humanities For the Youth)” in 2018. He also participated in the humanities art camp “2017 Yeosullo garojireugi – seoseohi garojireul ttae (2017 예술로 가로지르기-서서히 가로지를 때, 2017 Traversing Through Art – Slowly And Steadily), which explores new way of reasoning including interdisciplinary art and converging art emerged by interchanging art fields. 7)
Writing
Criticism of civilization
Ham’s poetry repeatedly presents antagonism between two negative spaces, the city and the sea, and expresses critical perception of cities and civilization. 56eok 7cheonmannyeonui godok (56억 7천만년의고독, Solitude of 5 Billion And 670 Million Years) published in 1992 is one of his major poetry collections. 8) He represents cities as a space of filthiness and despair in his poems such as Bidulgiseun wae dosireul tteonaji anneunga (비둘기는 왜 도시를 떠나지 않는가, Why Pigeons Don’t Leave Cities) and Ipseong (입성, Entering a City). This stance of his is in a way related to disappointment over the fact that 6 June 1987 Democratization rally ended up with the birth of the 6th republic of Korea. 9) 10) In his poetry sequence Geonchuksahuihak (건축사회학, Architecture Sociology), Ham wrote poems about iconic Korean buildings including Independence Hall of Korea, Lotte World 11), and 63 Square 12) disclosing unfairness of a war, commercialization of capitalism, poor working conditions vividly.
Deconstructive attempt
Ham’s tragic contemplation over the modern civilization leads to an avant-garde desire which tries to tear down institutionalized art. 13) His poetry is completely focused on doing away with stereotypes, 14) and their forms depict a variety of deconstructive attempts. He broke the fixed form of poetry (lining up on the left) in Heurin gangeui mulgogi (흐린 강의 물고기, A Fish In a Murky River), Daeguk (대국, Great Powers), used a screenplay form in 7. Sarang-bulganeunghan (7. 사랑-불가능한, 7. Love-Impossible). He put images of Jineon (진언, Mantra) 15), news articles, and a whole part of another text, and realized intertextuality which incorporates diverse voices in one literary work. 16) 17) From his poetry Seong Taj Mahal (성 타즈마할, St. Taj Mahal, 1998), Ham began to use post-footnotes actively. The footnotes include the poet’s sentiment and opinions as well as references, and come as a shock to conventional poetry reading.

도입부
함성호(1963~)는 한국의 시인, 건축가이다. 현대 문명과 자본주의에 대한 비판적 의식을 바탕으로1) 기존의 형식과 관념을 해체하는 개성적인 시세계를 보여주었다.
생애
1963년 강원도 속초에서 태어났다. 연극 <빨간 피터의 고백>을 보고 내용과 분장, 배우에 매료되어 글을 쓰기 시작했다.2) 1990년 《문학과 사회》 여름호에 <비와 바람 속에서> 외 3편을 발표하면서 등단했다.
시집 《56억 7천만년의 고독》(1992), 《성 타즈마할》(1998), 《너무 아름다운 병》(2001), 《키르티무카》(2011)를 펴냈으며, 산문집 《허무의 기록》(1998), 《당신을 위해 지은 집》(2011), 《아무것도 하지 않는 즐거움》(2013)을 출간하였다. 2001년 현대시작품상을 수상했다. <21세기 전망> 동인에 참여하였으며, 《문학 판》 편집위원과 문화웹진 《PENCIL》 편집위원을 지냈다.
1991년에 건축지 《공간》 신인평론상에 당선되어 건축평론가로도 활동했다. 건축 평론집 《건축의 스트레스》(2004), 《반하는 건축》(2012)을 출판했다.
문학과 건축 외에도 만화 비평, 영화 비평, 공연 기획, 전시 기획 등 다방면에서 활발히 활동3)하였다. 만화 평론집 《만화당 인생》(2002)을 냈으며, 미술‧전시 기획자들과 함께 산문집 《서울생활의 발견》(2003)을 썼다. 공동 기행산문집 《낯선 땅에 홀리다》(2011)에 참여하기도 하였다.
2007년 제주도 해군 기지 건설 관련 문제3)가 불거지면서 2013년 강정평화책마을 준비반장을 맡기도 했다.4) 2018년에는 시인 강정, 소설가 김태용 등과 프로젝트 그룹 <비껴가는 사람들>에 참여하여 퍼포먼스 <냄새 피워서 죄송합니다>를 공연했다.5)6)
인문학에도 깊은 관심을 갖고 《융합 인문학》(2016), 《청춘을 위한 인문학》(2018) 등에 기고하였다. 예술 영역 간 교차로 생겨난 다원예술, 융복합 예술을 비롯하여 새로운 사유를 탐색하는 인문예술캠프 <2017 예술로 가로지르기-서서히 가로지를 때>에 참여7)하기도 했다.
작품 세계
문명 비판
함성호의 시는 부정적 공간인 도시와 부정적 공간인 바다의 대립을 반복적으로 제시하면서 도시와 문명에 대한 비판적 인식을 드러냈다. 《56억 7천만년의 고독》(1992)이 대표적인 시집이다.8) <비둘기는 왜 도시를 떠나지 않는가>, <입성> 등에서 도시는 불결한 공간, 절망의 공간으로 나타난다. 이러한 태도는 1987년 6월항쟁이 군사독재의 연장인 6공화국9) 탄생으로 이어진 사실에 대한 실망감과도 어느 정도 연관이 있다.10) <건축사회학> 연작에서는 한국의 대표적인 건축물인 독립기념관, 롯데월드11), 63빌딩12)을 소재로 삼아 전쟁의 부정성, 자본주의의 상품화, 열악한 노동 환경 등을 생생하게 고발하였다. 함성호가 그려내는 부정적인 ‘도시’에 대립하는 공간은 주로 ‘어머니’가 있는 ‘고향’, 생명이 살아 숨쉬는 자연인 ‘바다’로 나타난다.
해체주의적 시도
현대 문명에 대한 함성호의 비극적 인식은 제도화된 예술을 무너뜨리려는 전위적 욕망으로 이어진다.13) 함성호의 시는 기존의 관념을 깨뜨리는 데 철저하게 집중하며14), 형식적 측면에서는 다양한 해체주의적 시도로 나타난다. <흐린 강의 물고기>, <대국>에서는 고정된 시형태(왼쪽 정렬)를 깨뜨렸고, <7. 사랑. -불가능한>은 시나리오 형식을 차용했다. 시 중간에 진언15) 이미지나 뉴스 기사, 다른 텍스트의 한 부분을 통째로 삽입함으로써 한 작품 안에 여러 목소리가 구현되는 상호텍스트성을 구현하기도 한다.16)17) 《성 타즈마할》(1998)부터는 후주(後註)를 적극적으로 활용하기도 한다. 이때 후주는 참고한 자료의 출처뿐만 아니라 시인의 주관적 감상과 의견이 적극 표현되어 관습적 시읽기에 충격을 가한다.
